BikeFit Report

Future M.O.L.D.S Communities held a BikeFit project at GMCL Lady Helen Seymour House in Plaistow to engage the residents in participating in the 10 week project.

Before the project took place, FMC alongside the young people, got maintenance in to check the bikes were in working order and not a risk to participants.

They checked:

  • Breaks
  • Tire pressure
  • Wheel alignment
  • Gears
  • Pedals
  • Seat
  • Bolts
  • Road worthy

Week 1 - FMC were introduced to the young people and run them through a work shop which explained the rules and regulations for riding a bike in the street and in the road.

Week 2 – Bike safety check, explore route in pairs – Stratford, bike ride & evaluation

Week 3 – Bike safety check, explore map in small groups – Beckon, bike ride & evaluation

Week 4 – Bike safety check, plan route (individual) – bike ride & evaluation YP planned route

Week 5 – Bike safety check, plan route & bike ride & evaluation – YP planned route & group work on evaluation & project development

Week 6 – Bike safety check, plan route & bike ride evaluation – YP planned route

The objectives for this project were:

  • Using foyer bikes too access main cycling routes
  • Group bike ride whilst exploring the Olympic legacy left behind after the games
  • Participating will increase fitness with 90mins cycling sessions
  • Participants learned map reading skills and learned how to plan routes embedding literacy and numeracy, recording street names, distance and timescales
  • Participants will gain group work skills whilst developing map reading skills , during planning and exploring the routes using discussion
  • Reduce isolation and make new friends by encouraging peer support networks
  • Develop a regular group of cyclers and provide tools for sustainment
  • Increase bike/road safety awareness through completion of workshop on session 1
  • Participants will develop 5 cycle routes for future use by the group
